Rainbow Brite Cupcakes

Scarlett turns 3 on March 18th.  We are having her birthday party this Saturday at the park and we are all SO excited.  Her theme is Rainbow Brite.  She's been watching all of the original 1983 episodes on DVD for the past couple of months and is pretty enchanted by her.  I decided to make cupcakes instead of a cake.  Here is how that process is going.

First, a week ago I asked a friend to come over and brainstorm with me.  We came up with some really good ideas and did some Pinterest gazing.  Unfortunately, before she came over I failed to notice that we had less than half a bag of powdered sugar...a frosting necessity.  So, the consistency was way too runny and basically just melted off the cupcake.  I wish I had taken pictures, but I didn't.

I bought these amazing little stars to go along with the Rainbow Brite theme to put on top of each cupcake.  I have a bunch in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.  I only have a red one in the pictures below because I didn't want to waste anymore than I had to during practice rounds.  I had thought about doing something like this, but with the star on top.

It turned out more like this.
I just wasn't feeling it, plus dying all of the batter would be expensive and time consuming.

So, I tried a few other methods.

Just white, with a clear glitter powder and the stars on top.

White with red dust and the star.

White with red flakes, clear glitter powder, and the star.

This is the one I decided on in the end.  The picture doesn't do it justice, it's really pretty!  Here's a sample of some of the other colors with the flakes and the glitter minus their stars.  I'll show a final picture next weekend once they're all decorated and laid out for the party!  We wish all of our family could be here to celebrate with us!

Here's the treat bag that her friends are going to get.  Isn't it beautiful?!

This is what's inside of it, plus one M&M from each color of the rainbow (minus Indigo.)

Needless to say, I have had a lot of fun planning this party and probably spent way more time on it than I should have!  Especially since Scarlett is so easily excited.

Scarlett enjoying a taste test!

I'm happy you were having so much fun working on the decorations. Enjoy the moments you spend doing these things with Scarlett. Did she get to help mix the batter? I tried to take a bite out of her cake, but my computer is only 2D.
